Uncle Mas shares his final financial tips – for now

What a fun few weeks it has been. Thank you to everyone who followed Uncle Mas and participated in the weekly quizzes. We had many lucky winners. This is the final week of tip sharing by Uncle Mas for now, but not the last of Uncle Mas. We enjoyed having him around so much that we think we will keep him. Remember to watch out for the final quiz on Friday.

Uncle Mas knows the following advice is sure to save you money:

  • Buying cheap is buying expensive. Contrary to popular belief, saving money doesn’t automatically mean buying lower-end products. Think about the long-term value of the product. A cheaper product, for example a cheap laptop will need to be replaced sooner than a higher-end laptop that’s built to last longer. Think about the value you’ll get from a product over time; it’ll save you money.
  • Cancel unnecessary subscriptions. With nearly every service you can think of offering a monthly subscription, most people are subscribed to more things than they need. Do a cleanse of the different services you’re paying a monthly subscription for but aren’t using or don’t need and cancel it.
  • Find cheap or free ways to have fun.  Uncle Mas challenge you to come up with some creative ideas here instead of spending money on expensive outings.
  • Don’t try to keep up with the Joneses. Must you have the latest iPhone the day it is released, no matter how much it costs? Or are you constantly buying new clothes to keep up with the latest fashion trends?  If you can comfortably afford to buy the latest and greatest products, that’s fine. But if you’re buying it all with credit cards because you can’t really afford it, it’s a problem.  Practice patience and spend within your means.

  • Talk to a Financial Advisor. Financial advisors will help you start off on the right foot by determining what your goals are. Then they can steer you in the right direction for how to get there.  Unfortunately, a lot of people only speak to a financial advisor when they have a lot of money or just went through a financial crisis. Don’t wait for either of these extreme cases, contact an Iemas Financial Advisor today. Call 0860 102 383 or send an email to fas@iemas.co.za.
  • Practice preventive care. In most cases, it’s cheaper to maintain something than to wait for it to break and then repair it. That includes everything from your car to your health. For your car, that means taking your car for its service when it is due. By doing this it can prolong the life of your car and keep you from having to pay high repair bills. Maintaining your body involves eating right, exercising, and going to the doctor and dentist for regular check-ups. If you are in need of a new car, be sure to contact Iemas to buy, source or sell a vehicle. Call 0861 043 627 or email wheels@iemas.co.za

The last quiz will be available on Friday – if you are an Iemas member watch out for the email with the quiz or you can look out for it on our social media platforms. Answer all the questions correctly and stand a chance to win data, airtime or gaming vouchers.

You also stand a chance to win R5000 (of which R2000 will go towards a school or higher educational institution of your choice) if you apply for a loan before the end of July.
